The bathroom is the ultimate collaboration in function, organization, and design. Whether you’re looking for a high-quality vanity, striking lighting, or accessories to bring your space to life, outfit your bathroom with all the essentials.
Before diving into all the furniture and decor you want to outfit your bathroom with, consider your space and determine what exactly you need in your bathroom. Then, put the finishing touch on your bathroom with various decorative accessories that elevate the utility and design of your space.
There are a lot of choices when it comes to furnishing your bathroom, but it doesn’t have to be hard.
In any bathroom, you'll want to be sure three features are covered: storage, lighting, and a mirror.
When selecting storage solutions, consider what you'll be storing in your bathroom and how much space you'll need. Some people keep linens in their bathroom, requiring enough closet space for all your towels, sheets, and more. Others only store the bare essentials inside the bathroom itself and keep additional items nearby. You may want to store cleaning supplies, extra toilet paper, paper towels, or beauty supplies. A vanity with built-in storage such as a cabinet, drawers, or shelving can be a great option, as well as standalone storage, such as a freestanding cabinet, over-the-toilet storage rack or cabinet, or a medicine cabinet hidden behind your mirror or vanity.
For lighting, choose fixtures that are bright enough to perform tasks such as your beauty routine, but diffused enough not to wash you out or hurt your eyes. Ceiling lighting, wall sconces, and lit vanity mirrors are all options to illuminate your space.
Mirrors also come in a few styles. Some are a simple wall-hung mirror. Others include extra storage behind them, or can light up to help with your morning routine. A mirror is also a great way to add a pop of style, since they can come in many shapes, sizes, and aesthetics.
In addition to furniture, you can make your bathroom truly yours with different fixtures and decor items. Choose a color palette or theme to base your design choices on. Some popular bathroom designs include nautical themes, jungle themes, or varying shades of blue. If you don't plan to completely renovate the space, take a look at your existing furniture and fixtures to get some ideas and see what might match well.
Change out your faucet or shower head to a finish that will match the aesthetic of the room. Add a shower curtain, bath mats, towels, and washcloths in coordinating colors. Update hardware such as towel bars or hooks and toilet paper holders to complementary materials and finishes. Add wall art, candles, plants, or other ornamentation to round out the design. Finally, choose a mirror or vanity that will complement the aesthetic.
Because the bathroom is a wet and humid environment, any furnishings need to be water-resistant enough to withstand steam, splashes, and strong cleaners. Avoid delicate fabrics or untreated woods, as these can break down or mold. Ideal furnishings come in materials such as plastic, glass, ceramics, or treated metal or wood that is resistant to corrosion, warping, or rotting.
Almost all vanities and storage cabinets designated for the bathroom are made of these more resistant materials. Sinks typically come in porcelain or stone, while cabinets may be made of metal or a low-movement wood that isn't prone to swelling, cracking, or warping in high humidity. If you choose to add furniture that wasn't originally designed for such a damp space, you'll want to check out the materials to ensure they won't be damaged.
